History of Air France

The history of Air France begins in 1933 with the fusion of the four most important French transport companies. It kept the emblem from Air Orient, that of Hippocamus. The inauguration of the company was in Bourget on the 7th of October, 1933. The first event marking the history of Air France was the opening of the first connection between Paris and New York City in 1946. At this time however it took around 20 hours to cross the Atlantic. Air France completely modernized their fleet in the 1950’s with the arrival of Lockheed constellation.

The 1970’s marked a significant turn in the history of Air France. It was the decade of innovation. The company made its home in the new Roissy Airport and defined air travel by the biggest planes. In 1976 Air France offered the first commercial flights on the Concord with destinations to Rio de Janeiro and Dakar at a speed of 2000 km/h. In 1978, it introduced the Business Class which a lot of other airlines adopted later. Air France was partially privatized in 1999 and entered into alliance with Sky Team with three other airlines. The partnership with KLM was not established until the year 2000 and finally in 2009 Air France received its first Airbus A380, a double-decker airplane with four engines. It is the largest passenger airliner in the world.

• Onboard services

  • Meals: The meals are tradition French cuisine. If you follow a strict diet, be sure to warn Air France at least 48 hours before your flight. It is notable that the dinner wear is created by Philippe Starck, a famous French designer.
  • Entertainment: Air France offers on long flights 85 films, both new releases and classics. There are cartoons for children, games as well as newspapers. Most of the airplanes are equipped with individual screens.

• Baggage Allowances

  • Cabin: 1 bag is permitted with the maximum dimensions of 55cm x 35cm x 25cm, the maximum weight being 8kg plus a handbag (purse, laptop bag, camera bag, etc.)
  • Checked: The rules vary according to destinations. For the long-distance flights 2 suitcases are accepted, each with a maximum weight allowance of 23kg. On shorter flights, you can bring as well two bags but with a weight allowance of 20kg.
  • Excess: On domestic flights, 3€ per extra kg. To other European destinations there is a fee of 12€ for every extra kilo and on the long-distance flights 30€. On all types of flights extra baggage costs 150€. In the case of transporting extra goods (Sports equipments or pets), it is best to contact Air France before your flight.
