History of Air Malta

The forming of Air Malta was the result of needed air traffic to and from Malta after the Second World War. At the time there were a few different airlines operating similar services in Malta. In the 1950s a few of these airlines eventually combined their services together in an agreement. Eventually an international airline partnership was formed with PIA from Pakistan and Air Malta’s first flight took off on the first of April in 1974. At this time the government amalgamated all of the smaller airlines operating Malta flights into one international airline under one company name, Air Mala Co.

The first destinations were Rome, Manchester, London, Frankfurt, Paris and Tripoli. Air Malta operated with a fleet of Boeing aircraft in the 1980s until is received its first Airbus in 1987. In the 1990s routes to Catania and Palermo were added to the airlines expanding network. Malta opened its international airport in 1992, making a home base for the country’s international airline. In 2002 the airline began rejuvenating its fleet, slowly retiring its older aircraft. Air Malta is known as the airline that loses the least amount of luggage with an average of 4 bags per 1000 passengers! Today Air Malta enjoys a code share agreement with Qantas connecting Australia with Malta.
