Parking in Bergen isn’t too difficult but it’s good to know that parking is limited to 30 minutes or 2 hours in many places in the city centre. If you’re leaving for your rent car in Bergen longer, you’ll need to use a proper car park. The cheapest car park is the 24-hour Bygarasjen near the bus terminal, which costs NKR 75 for 24 hours.
Driving in Bergen is really easy, once you get used to the one-way streets in the city centre. There are expressways going in most directions out of the city so day trips are easily accessible. Good to know: toll stations are automated.
Road trips from Bergen: what to do, what to see
You can reach some pretty incredible nature just an hour outside of Bergen. Head north to Øygarden and take a ferry to Hellesøy, an island almost in the North Sea for beautiful nature. It’s also a great place to fish! If you’re not a fan of fishing, boat tours of the region are something not to be missed.
If adrenaline sports get your blood pumping, then a trip to Voss is a must. This village to the east of Bergen is known for its extreme sports like rafting and paragliding. Summer brings sports festivals like Ekstremsportveko. Otherwise, Voss is great for hiking and skiing in winter.
From Bergen, you can really discover Norway outside the capital. Rental car is the best way to do an “essential Norway” tour of the country starting in Bergen and stopping in Myrdal, Flåm, Gudvangen, Stalheim, Voss and back to Bergen again.
