What you should know before you rent a car

Car hires in Germany: practical information

Where to rent a car in Germany

As the largest European nation, Deutschland has a lot to offer when it comes down to holidays in Germany. If you think Germany is the same across the nation, you think wrong. Each region has its own distinct culture and heritage, even dialect. From the north to southern Bavaria, the Black Forest across to the gorgeous Rhine Valley and East Germany, there's no doubt you're going to need a Germany car hire to get around. You can pick up a cheap Germany car rental at any airport. You'll find all the major car hire companies represented there either right in the terminal building or nearby in the car park areas.

In most all major cities you'll find a number of rental agencies in the city centres as well. If you're looking for a one way Germany car hire, you'll find the bigger brands like Hertz, Europcar, Avis and National will offer this at no extra cost. If you plan to take your Germany cheap car rental out of the country, keep in mind that many prohibit their cars from being taken to eastern European countries like Poland and Czech Republic.

Driving in Germany: parking and other tips

Unlike the UK, it is allowed to turn right on a red light as long as the coast is clear and there is no small green right-indicating arrow on the set of traffic lights. It is against the law to use a mobile phone while driving, even while stopped at traffic lights. Hands-free sets only. While many drivers love Germany for its speed-free autobahns be careful about your speed in the rest of the country. Germany has the highest concentration of speed cameras in Europe!

Using the autobahn is a lot of fun if you like speed and it's a very fast way to travel around the country with a cheap Germany car hire. When it says no speed limit, it really means no speed limit so drivers will take this literally. Always use the right lane as long as it's free. You may use the middle and left lanes if there are slower vehicles on the right but watch out for really fast cars coming up on the left.

Road trips in Germany: what to do, what to see

Romantic Road

If you're looking for the classic Germany out of the storybooks then the Romantic Road is one trip you have to make. This route takes you along some very picturesque passages with romantic castles and quaint medieval villages. The road runs from Würzburg to Füssen. The Fortress Marienberg and the Würzburg Residence as not to be missed, nor are the three castles in Füssen.

Berlin

Berlin is often left to the wayside when it comes to exciting European capitals. While it may lack the beauty of Paris or the grandeur of London, Berlin makes up for in so many other ways. Architecturally it's a mismatch but its underground culture and laid-back atmosphere make it a great stop on any road trip with a discount Germany car hire.

Baltic Sea

The northern part of Germany is known for its extensive coastline on the beautiful Baltic Sea and the chilly North Sea. It's where all the Germans head for a seaside escape close to home, but you can bet it won't be as warm as Tenerife! The Baltic Sea coast is famous for its long sandy beaches, the best of which are near Kiel. These "bathing beaches" are a stark contrast to the chalky cliffs further up the coast and the wild nature in the National Park Jasmund on Rügen.
