What you should know before you rent a car

Car hires in Iceland: practical information

Where to rent a car in Iceland

Iceland is a country of superlatives. The stunning and vast landscapes, with its piping hot geysers to sleeping volcanoes, craggy coasts to chic and quaint towns, Iceland is one country you have to experience with a cheap Iceland car rental. Most visitors will arrive via Reykjavik and the easiest place to get a rental is a car hire Iceland airport. You'll find both local and major car hire companies in Iceland. At Keflavik Airport, choose from Budget, Avis, Hertz or Europcar.

Most rent cars include basic insurance but if you plan to off-road a bit, then it's highly recommended to opt for additional insurance to cover damage caused by loose gravel. Remember that it won't save you any by renting a car on the spot. Rentals are almost always cheaper when reserved in advance.

Driving in Iceland: parking and other tips

Economy Iceland car rentals are the easiest way to get around the country. Most of Iceland's attractions are located outside the capital and while there are tour operators offer reasonable prices, it's much easier and flexible to venture out on your own with a car hire Iceland city. Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road in Iceland.

There are many petrol stations that are open 24-hours, so finding petrol in the middle of the night is never a problem. It's a good idea to always keep the tank at least half full when driving for longer distances through the back country, just in case. There are two signs to keep in mind while driving a cheap Iceland car hire. First: malbik endar which indicates the road will change from paved to gravel. Second: einbreið brú which indicates that a bridge with one lane is coming up.

Road trips in Iceland: what to do, what to see

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa in the south-western part of Iceland, near Grindavik. The water are rich in silica and sulphur, so don't mind the smell! The lagoon is famous for its healing 40°C waters and is really enjoyable, especially in colder temperatures. Get the most out of your spa day by getting a silica mud treatment, swim around the lagoon and relax in one of the caves or the steam baths. You can reach the Blue Lagoon in less than an hour from Reykjavik by car.

Þingvellir National Park

Located in southern Iceland, Þingvellir is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is home to the longest running Parliament in the world. Parliament was first established here in 930 AD. Why should you go there? For the wild landscape! This place sits right on the border of the tectonic plates that divide Europe from North America. First visit the old parliament site, then head to the lava fields.

Skaftafell

Glacier hiking is one of the most popular things to do while on holidays in Iceland. The best area to do it is Skaftafell, located in south-east Iceland. This area is home to the highest mountain in Iceland, the largest glacier and the most powerful waterfall in Europe (back to the superlatives!). As it is part of a national park there is a small fee upon entering. There are glacier hikes year-round and ice-climbing is also popular.
