Car hires in Kefalonia: practical information
Where to rent a car in Kefalonia
Have you ever wanted to explore the Ionian Islands in Greece? It's as easy as booking some cheap flights and picking up a rental car as soon as you arrive. The world is your oyster after all, so why wait to explore it? Kefalonia is best explored by car, mostly because of the lack of available public transportation. You'll find Budget and Avis at different locations on the island. They're quite spread out however, so it's best to make a car hire comparison on Kefalonia before choosing one.
At the airport, you'll find a Budget car rental pick-up point. Further down the coast in Argostoli you'll find another Budget as well as a local company called Kappatou. Some hotels offer airport pick-up, especially the resort-style ones. Others also have their own car hire facilities for guests who wish to explore other parts of the island. Apart from Argostoli, you can also rent a car in Lassi.
Driving in Kefalonia: parking and other tips
In Kefalonia's smaller towns you won't have much trouble parking just about anywhere. In the capital however, Argostoli, it can get tricky. The locals seem to park wherever they please but the parking inspectors seem to be able to pick the rental out immediately. Don't take your chances by parking like the locals, follow the street signs and only park in designated areas.
It's the norm these days for hotels in Kefalonia to offer free parking to their guests. Even if you're visiting a beach near a major hotel, it's possible you can also park in their hotel lot. While most visitors who hire a car in Kefalonia don't have a problem, always watch out for Greek drivers, especially if their car has a "ZZ" license plate. It means they're from Athens, and likely have a short-temper when driving. The island locals are much more relaxed when driving. As well traffic in popular towns and cities can be a little mad. Apart from exploring the coasts, make sure you also check out other Ionian Islands as well while on holidays in Kefalonia!
Road trips from Kefalonia: what to do, what to see
First up is Corfu, the most northern Ionian Island. If you like the mountains, stay in the north part of the island where you can trek as much as your heart desires. The south part of the island is more sandy, with plenty of beaches. You should also stop by Benitses, a very traditional fishing town with great seafood.
Zante, also known as Zakinthos, is another island nearby that is worth checking out. It's the third largest island in the Ionian Sea with a wealth of small Greek towns, endless archaeological excavations going on and beautiful scenery. The island is lush with rolling green hills and white rock mountains. Scuba dive, turtle spot and relax on the beach, there's not more to it than that!
Even Italy is just a jump away with the ferry across the Ionian Sea. The sole of the boot is directly across from Kefalonia and makes a great addition to a holiday in Greece. You can either take your rental car with you on the ferry, or hire a car in Italy once you arrive. Ferries usually dock in Bari and Brindisi and from there, the gorgeous southern coast of Italy is all yours.
