Heading for a holiday in York? History buffs should have York at the top of their list, it's as ancient as England itself with history older than the Romans. While York doesn't have its own airport, it is well serviced by a number of other UK airports. The closest airport to York is the Leeds-Bradford International Airport, followed by Manchester Airport. From either of these you can rent a car to reach York. At Leeds Airport choose your rent car for York from Hertz, Avis or Europcar. At Manchester Airport choose the cheapest car rental to York from Europcar.

If you're looking for a car hire York train station then you have two choices: Europcar or Hertz. In York town centre you'll also find Minster Self Drive, Europcar and Enterprise. Consider the commute to/from the airport when choosing a rent car in York town centre, it may be cheaper to hire a car from the airport.

Parking in York: what you should know

Driving in York doesn't come highly recommended. Roads were better designed for horse and buggy rather than cars. The city is doing it's bit to help reduce the use of cars in the city centre by jacking up parking prices. It is recommended to leave your economy car rental in York either at a Park & Ride station, at your hotel or in a city car park.

There are a number of hotels in York with free parking including Lady Anne Middleton's Hotel and the Best Western Monkbar. The Royal York Hotel offers parking for an additional charge, as does the Best Western Dean Court Hotel, for £12.50/night.

  • A stone's throw away: Castle Howard is 16 miles from York and makes a great afternoon trip from York. It was used as one of the locations in the filming of Brideshead Revisited. Since you have an affordable car hire in York, take the time to visit Kirkham Priory while you're at it. There are a number of other historical sites in an around these as well including Bolton Abbey and Riveaux Abbey.
  • A little further: Leeds is, of course, the biggest city in Yorkshire and is 25 miles drive from lovely York. It boasts a full line-up of restaurants, theatres, concerts… the nightlife in general is spectacular here. Why not visit in summer when the city hosts a number of excellent festivals?
  • A proper day-trip: Is any proper holiday complete without a little sea, albeit a cold one? Scarborough is the closest seaside escape to York and makes a perfect day trip. The North Sea, Scarborough Castle and the fish quay are just a few of the sights. Those literary fans might want to also stop by Anne Bronte's grave.
