Where to rent a car in Aberdeen

As the third largest city in Scotland, Aberdeen is a great city to explore by four wheels and two feet. It's rich in culture, has a vibrant nightlife and is the gateway to the highlands. You will find Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Alamo, National and Enterprise at the airport. Pick ups are at Broomfield Road. In order to get the best price, it's essential to compare car hire deals with different companies before choosing.

While many go for the familiar, it can sometimes be a better deal to go with a local company. Logan Car Hire for example which is located in the city centre. Second Choice, Arnold Clark and Fair Price are also located centrally.

Parking in Aberdeen: what you should know

There is on-street parking, metered parking as well as car parks. If your hotel in Aberdeen doesn't offer parking, then your best bet would be to find a car park which will charge between £8 and £15/day.

You can park at off-street Pay & Display spots for up to 2 hours, longer at Golden Square Inner Circle. You will need to drop £2-4 into the meter between 8am and 10pm from Monday to Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1pm to 5pm. On-street Pay & Display will put you back £1 for 20 minutes in the city's central zones so it's best to avoid those.

Road trips from Aberdeen: what to do, what to see

• A stone's throw away: There are plenty of castles within close driving distance of Aberdeen. Within 30 miles you'll find Crathes (15 miles along A93), Drum (11 miles along A93) and Dunottar (18 miles along A947).
• A little further: What's a trip to Scotland without tasting the famous juices coming out of their distilleries? There is one famous distillery trail which will take you 30 miles north of Aberdeen, the Malt Whisky Trail. It takes you to a number of them, including Glenfiddich and Glen Grant.
• A proper day-trip: Take a trip to the Royal Deeside! It encompasses a few towns including Aboyne, Ballater and Braemar. All of these are worth stopping in, at least for a poke around. The Queen's summer residence is also nearby, the famous Balmoral Castle.
