To reach the sand bar, you have to go around towards the south, near Cartagena which will tack on another 25+ miles to the distance but it's worth it.
• A little further: Just about the same distance, 50 miles, is Alicante. This buzzing seaside city has tons to offer, especially if you're looking for a good place to work on your tan. Spend the day at the beach, surfing or swimming and at night head into the old town to get a bite of some fresh seafood and then a party. This university town has loads of energy, can you keep up?
• A proper day-trip: In the other direction, make some time in your trip to visit Almeria. If you're keen on something a bit off the usual track, then check out Cabo de Gata. Drive along the coastal towns, stopping especially in San José. There are many small coves where you can spread yourself out without any onlookers. This place is a secluded favourite.
