Where to rent a car in Naples

Are you thinking of buying tickets from London to Naples for an Italian holiday? Then you'd best also be thinking about booking car rentals in Naples as well. It is the best way to get in, out and around the city. The best place to pick up a car rental in Naples is from Capodichino International Airport, just 3 miles from the city centre. If you prefer to rent a car from the city, the best places are near the Central Station, along Via Piedigrotto, Via Partenope and Via Montagna Spaccata where you can find not only luxury dealers but the usual international ones like Hertz and Avis, among others.

Naples Capodichino Airport is well connected to the city, just steps away from the city centre. If you rent a car at the airport, it's very easy to navigate yourself to the historic centre of Naples in around 15 minutes, traffic permitting of course.

Parking in Naples: what you should know

Legend has it that if you can manage to drive in Naples, you can drive anywhere in the world! This says a lot about traffic and the general attitude towards drivers in Naples. It's bottleneck twice a day downtown and the drivers are ruthless. We do not recommend driving in the city centre around Piazza Garibaldi, Corso Umberto, Via Medina, Via Marina, etc. This is true especially during peak hours. It's better to park your rental car in a Neapolitan suburb which is connected via bus.

Our advice? Leave your rental car at the Brin car park on Via Volta. It's a guarded car park for quite cheap by Naples standards. Park for 4 hours for €1.30. Each additional hour will cost €0.30. Parking all day? €7.20. From Brin you can take public transportation to quite cheap. Thinking of parking downtown? Forget it. You can buy tickets from "scrapers" but there are many illegal parking attendants who will rip you off as soon as they see you are a foreigner in a rental car. Alternatively, you're also better off booking hotels in Naples with car parks or that can recommend safe places to park your rental car in Naples overnight.

Road trips from Naples: what to do, what to see

    Trips from Naples
  • A stone's throw away: First things first. In Naples you should definitely visit the historical city centre before you get out of the city. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. In winter, there are many markets selling handmade nativity scenes before Christmas, a huge draw for tourists. There are also many artisan pizza shops selling traditional pizza by the slice… the real deal in the city where it was created! Don't miss the Duomo, PIazza del Gesu Nuovo, Via Roma and the Piazza Trieste.
  • A little further: Pompeii, to put it lightly, is a must. Admire the ruins of a city once destroyed. It's the best preserved ancient Roman city in the world. While many parts are in danger of deterioration due to tourist numbers, it's a fantastic site to visit and is definitely recommended while on holidays in Naples.
  • A proper day-trip: Next is the Sorrento Coast, arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world! From Vico Equense to Massa Lubrense and gradually in the direction of Salerno. The natural landscapes are breathtaking and there are ample towns to pull over in and enjoy some home-style cooking!
