Dreaming of Rhodes? This incredible island is one of Greece's biggest and more fertile islands in the Mediterranean. Beaches, archeological sites and medieval towns make Rhodes a tourist hot spot! Getting around the island is easiest done by either car or motorcycle. While it's not recommended to bring your own car here, or a rental from inland, you can easily rent a car in Rhodes from the airport. Parking in Rhodes: what you should know

Parking in Rhodes Town is, to be blunt, a nightmare. The city just isn't designed for cars. At least the Romans didn't plan on cars when they built the town. Today, both parking and driving in Rhodes is becoming a problem during peak tourist season. There are many narrow one-way streets and it is rare for find a free parking place. The best is to find a car park and stay there, or only book at hotels in Rhodes that offer parking.

Outside of Rhodes Town parking is easier to find, especially in resort villages and along the coast. Most beaches have their own car parks/lots for the public to use for a fee. In all cases, don't just leave your car unattended unless you are sure you are parked properly in a designated parking place.

Road trips from Rhodes: what to do, what to see

The roads in Rhodes aren't particularly the best. There are paved highways around the island for the most part but roads inland are notoriously bad, sometimes little more than a dirt pathway. If you're sticking to the beaches and the coastal areas during your holiday in Rhodes however, this should be no problem.

• A stone's throw away: Surf, sun and sand. Gennadi Beach is the surfer's paradise and even if you're not brave enough to get out on a board, it's a great place to sunbathe. Near Prasonisi, the village is quiet with excellent restaurants. If it's possible that there is still a virgin beach on the island, this would be it.
• A little further: If you're looking for a challenge, try Mt Attavyros. It's the highest peak on the island and makes for a challenging 2-3 hour trek. Leave Embonas on the way to Siana and drive up one of the agricultural roads (yes, the dirt ones) and find a place to park for the day. Watch out for the rocks painted red, they show the best route up!
• A proper day-trip: From Rhodes City you can take a ferry to all the nearby Dodecanese Islands including Tilos, Leros, Kos, Halki, Kalymnos, Symi and Kastelorizo.
