Experience Budapest: what to do, what to see

Budapest offers some of the best of the remaining grandeur of a century past while still offering a fresh and energetic party scene every night of the week. History can be found around every corner; innocent monuments stand here and there, retelling the stories of the city during WWII and the Revolution of 1956. After a day of sights, ease your way into one of the thermal baths in the city and soak in the healing waters fed by natural springs running below the city. Budapest, for good reason, has been crowned the city of spas.

Essentials in Budapest

Despite the graffiti that covers most walls of the seedy parts of town, Budapest remains one of the most romantic cities in all of Europe. It has history, royalty and culture that are worth more than a casual glance. Learn the name of a Hungarian King, sip on a little pálinka, photograph the parliament, walk along the Danube, find the oldest book in the national library, skate on top of West Side mall, grab a bowl of goulash and learn how to say Jó étvágyat! Bet you didn't know there was so much to do while on holidays in Budapest now did you?

Heroes' Square: Hungarian history lives in this large central square. It has become a major site and attraction for every visitor in Budapest. It is located at the very end of Andrássy Utca and is right next to City Park. The square is surrounded as well by two of Budapest’s best art galleries, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Art. The men in the monument are all important to the history of the city.

Szechenyi Thermal Baths: Thermal baths are essential to any visit to Budapest. Szechenyi is one of the larger ones and it is arguably the most beautiful. It was built in 1881 on top of a thermal spring that still feeds the pools today. There are outdoor pools which are particularly enjoyable in the wintertime as well as indoor pools. Massage services are available as well.

Statue Park: A collection of Communist statues have found new homes in a park outside of the city centre. Many of them were destroyed but a Hungarian group saved some to preserve an important part of Hungarian and European history. It offers a look into Hungarian life during the Communist regime through film and exhibitions inside their bunker. It's an open-air museum. There is a booklet for a small fee which explains each statue, very useful!

The Fishermen’s Bastion: On the Buda side of the Danube is the Fishermen’s Bastion. It offers a spectacular lookout onto the city, especially towards the Pest side of Budapest. It was built in the late 1800s. The name dates back to medieval times and has been perfectly restored for visitors to enjoy and explore.

Ludwig Museum of Art: This contemporary art museums offers a unique look into the last fifty years of Hungarian and international art. Some of the main pieces include works by American pop artists Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Claes Oldenburg. There are frequently changing temporary exhibitions that are excellently curated and worthwhile.

Accommodations in Budapest

Budapest is a main-stay for many travellers, leisure and business alike. There are plenty of options for both budget travellers and those looking for a touch of luxury. Because of Budapest’s popularity in the summertime however, it is strongly recommended to book hotels in Budapest far in advance, especially if you’re looking for a great deal. In the wintertime, it is very easy to find a hotel room, even a discounted luxury one. You can find double rooms discounted up to 30% during the off-season.

Where to stay? Budapest is divided into districts which are represented in the postal codes of addresses. Districts V, VI and VII encompass the city centre on the Pest side of the river. These are the best areas to stay if you want to be in the middle of the action. Shopping areas, sights and the best restaurants are a stone’s throw away. If you want something more elegant, try looking for a hotel in District I, on the Buda side where you’ll sleep among castles, medieval gates and ancient ruins.
