When to book cheap cheap flights to Cape Town

Cape Town has a climate very similar to the Mediterranean. Winter lasts from May until September with a lot of rain and strong winds. Summer starts in November and lasts until the end of March. It is warm and very dry. Thanks to strong winds from the south, the city doesn’t suffer too much from air pollution. With a generally mild climate though, there's no bad time to book tickets from London to Cape Town.

  • Peak season: November to January, especially during the official holiday season in South Africa from December 1st to January 15th. Easter is also very popular.
  • Low season: February to March, also October. The weather is quite changeable however, but you could get lucky!

Flight duration

Direct flights to Cape Town from London take 11h 30min. Flights with one stopover take at least 14h.

Experience Cape Town: what to do, what to see

Cape Town is South Africa’s second largest city but it doesn’t let itself be pushed aside by Johannesburg. This city packs a lot of punch, art, music and culture which is enjoyed by locals as much as visitors on holidays in Cape Town. It's one of the world’s most iconic cities in the world, attracting attention for its world-class wines, its stunning landscapes, the very agreeable climate, and its proximity to other famous South African towns like Cape Winelands, Paarl and Franschhoek.

Essentials in Cape Town

Pack your walking shoes and be prepared to jump in with this city’s lively locals. Explore the streets of Bo-Kaap or climb to the top of Table Mountain (don’t worry there is a cable car to help you). Cape Town is one of the best spots in the world for learning how to surf. Rent a board or spend your days lazing on any of the pristine beaches in False Bay. Hike, kayak, whale watch and learn; you’ll see really quickly why Cape Town is the place to be.

Robbin Island: Robben Island has been used in a lot of ways throughout history: jail, mental institution, leper colony, military base, etc. Today it is a museum, made famous by the island’s most important inhabitant, Nelson Mandela. Today the island is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Boats leave to the island on the hour.

District Six Museum: This is one of Cape Town’s most poignant museums. It features display s and stories of District Six, an area of Cape Town which was filled with a vibrant mix of artisans, immigrants, labourers, freed slaves and merchants. In 1966 the neighbourhood was declared a white area and more than 60 000 people were forced from their homes which were then demolished. The museums maps, photographs, audio recordings and written testimonies help build visitors a picture of what District Six once was.

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway: Ride one of two cable cars to catch spectacular views while you ride to the summit of Table Mountain. To reach the lower Cable Station you should take a car or taxi since it is a long way from the city by foot. Admission: R120 round-trip or R60 one-way.

Groot Constantia: The town of Constantia, not far from Cape Town is named after a winery that has been established here since 1685 by the first Dutch governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. You can visit his estate which is now a museum, the old wine cellar and taste some of the winery’s wines. The reds come highly recommended. Buy a picnic lunch for R110 from Jonkershuis and enjoy the scenery behind the cellar buildings.

Food & Drink: South African is anything but bland; it features dishes and flavours from around the world, mixing indigenous traditions with the foods brought by settlers from India, Britain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany and France. The most popular are curried dishes with sweet chutneys. But like most major cities you can find a great deal of North American and European fast-food restaurants as well. If you want to eat local ask for Karoo lamb, fruit produced in the area around Cape Town and for seafood try yellowtail, cape salmon and oysters when they are in season.

Accommodations in Cape Town

If you are travelling to Cape Town during peak holiday seasons you’d better arrive with a reservation. It is almost impossible to find a decent room between December and January if you show up to town without one already booked. Instead, try travelling between April and August when you’re more likely to find a great hotel in Cape Town at an even better price.

Business travellers should find a hotel in the city centre. This is also recommended if you’re not staying in town long. If you’re looking to party at night, find a hotel along the Waterfront. For an area that is as stunning as it is tranquil, look for a hotel in Constantia, in the Southern Suburbs. If you stay here, we also recommend hiring a car. Instead of a hotel, why not opt for a bed and breakfast or a guesthouse? These are becoming increasingly popular in Cape Town offering personal service and a touch of home.
