Larnaca is home to the main international airport, so it's just natural that most travellers spend their Larnaca holidays here. Palm trees, long sandy beaches, clear waters and great tourist amenities means this is one hot place to be once summer rolls around, not just because of the weather. Don't miss the old city centre though or other architectural jewels like the Byzantine churches.

Ayia Napa: While Larnaca has a city beach, it's not the best in the area. Many travellers staying in Larnaca spend most of their time in Ayia Napa which has a string of beaches that goes on for at least 25km. Beach hopping is totally the thing to do.

Church of St. Lazarus: In the older part of the city there is a 9th century Orthodox church that is definitely worth seeing. History has it that remains of Lazarus, who was raised from the dead by Jesus, are buried underneath the church. His tomb was discovered in 890 and the saint's remains are now in France.

Salt Lake: Many believe that the tomb of Mohammed's mother is here. What is special about this lake? In the winter, you can see flocks of pink flamingos here. It's the second largest in the country and from March to November is little more than a crust of white salt.

Scuba diving: If you're tired of the beach, get yourself into the water! Divers come from all over the world to see the wreck of the Zenobia, a ferry that sunk in the 1980s, just a few hundred metres from the harbour. The ships now lies 42m below the surface of the water, a cool spot for even novice divers.

Seafood: Take a stroll along the waterfront when you're looking for a restaurant. Fresh seafood will be calling you name. Cypriot food is a delicious mix of Greek and Turkish recipes, rich in fresh ingredients. like okra, artichokes, Haloumi cheese and especially herbs like cumin and coriander. Treat yourself to some fresh calamari, octopus, cuttlefish and sea bass.

Larnaca has plenty of options for hotels, especially for the traveller wanting something special, something more than just an ordinary beach-side hotel. The hotels along the northern branch of Larnaca Bay tend to be the best quipped for amenities and entertainment. They're modern in design and also more expensive that other hotels in Larnaca. Generally though, hotel room prices are cheaper here than elsewhere in Cyprus. If you're travelling to Larnaca in the summer, an air-conditioned room is essential. Ask before booking, as some hotels aren't fully air-conditioned.
