Essentials in Paphos

Paphos is really a city built on contrasts. Kato (Lower Paphos) caters to tourists with endless night clubs with flashy lights and electronic music. Strikingly enough the city's most beautiful ruins are found there. Ktima (Upper Paphos) however is pretty much free from anything touristy. It's calmer and more "local" than Kato. There are lovely colonial buildings and for something unusual, don't miss the Turkish Quarter, Mouttalos.

Kato: Tourists will find themselves spending most of their time in the lower Kato Paphos which also lies conveniently along the beach. These sands have been enjoyed by travellers long before the Brits discovered this place. Romans, Egyptians, Venetians, Greeks and Phoenicians have all been known to have enjoyed the Cyprus sun.

Paphos Archaeological Park: For the Indiana Jones wanna-be's, head to Paphos Archaeological Park first. You'll find here a number of interesting sites including the House of Dionysus and the House of Theseus, both are ruins of large Roman villas with spectacular mosaics. The Tomb of the Kings isn't what its name play it up to be. No royal family members are buried here, only rich citizens and high city officials. The tombs date back to the fourth century and give an interesting look back into burial rituals in a complex carved out of solid rock.

Paphos Mosaics: This collection of colourful mosaics is also in the Paphos archaeological site, just next to the Agora. It was found during the 1960s by accident and after some excavation, construction workers discovered the hidden floor of a large (likely very wealthy) residence. Many of the mosaics feature Dionysus.

Aphrodite's Cultural Route: It's no mystery why the Cypriots believe that their island is the home to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty and love. Follow her trail from Paphos to Petra Tou Romiou. Aphrodite's Rock, to her Bath along the northern coast of the Akamas peninsula and visit what is left of her temple in Kouklia.

Food & Wine: As for food, opt for something traditional. Family-run restaurants in surrounding villages are the best and cheapest option.
