Not to be cliché but it's hard NOT to fall in love with this city at first sight. All it take is one holiday to Verona and you'll see why not only lovers flock to this city. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Verona was wooed poets and painters for centuries.

Roman Arena: This arena, built in the 1st century AD, has survived the test of time, including an earthquake the in 12th century! This pink-marbled opera house seats 30,000 people. During the summer the area hosts a wealth of performances by the opera industry's best names. During the winter many classical concerts take place. Tickets cost anywhere from €15 to €150.

Giardino Giusti: There's nothing unromantic about this beautifully sculpted garden. The garden is named after the family who has taken care of it and the adjacent mansion since it first opened to the public in 1591. The mix of soaring Cypress trees and lush wild plants create a welcome green refuge during the summer afternoons. Legend has it that if lovers can find each other in the shrub maze then they are destined to be with each other. Open from 9am to 8pm.

Duomo: Verona has a Duomo that gives the one in Florence a run for its money. This 12th century building may look bleak from the outside but the interior is lavishing. The ceilings are covered in frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries. The entire place is strikingly beautiful.

Casa di Giulietta: If you can't find Juliet's house just follow the girls with letters in their hands. It's located just off of Verona's main shopping strip, Via Guiseppe Mazzini.According to history the city of Verona was actually controlled by a fierce rivalry between two families, it's no wonder Verona set the stage for Shakespeare's play. The house was built in the 14th century. Lovers leave letters and notes to Juliet on the wall while others rub Juliet's (now shiny from use) right breast on the courtyard statue for luck in love.

Arche Scaligere: While a little morbid, these funerary arches are incredible. Walk through to the end of the Piazza dei Signori to the Gothic monuments belonging to the tombs of the Della Scala family near Santa Maria Antica Church. Nearby are excavations which reveal Verona's medieval history.
