With lakes, mountains and forests just outside the city, it's a great area as well for outdoor enthusiasts. Rent a bike or take a boat tour of Zürichsee and check out the largest waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls.

Grossmünster: This Romanesque church offers great views from the tower but its finer details shouldn't be overlooked. The little Gothic characters atop the towers for example. The core of the church was built in the 12th century... apparently discovered by Charlemagne when his horse tripped onto the site.

Kunsthaus: Art-lovers won't be disappointed, there's something for them at the Kunsthaus featuring works by Giacometti and 18th century surrealist painter Fuseli. It's free on Wednesdays.

Uetliberg: Taking a hike up this hill is quite the work-out, so some might rather enjoy the train instead. From the viewing tower you can get a breathe-taking 360 degree view of Zurich and the surroundings... not for those who are afraid of heights or suffer from vertigo.

Lake Promenade: The lake is a great place to spend an afternoon. Walk along the boardwalk which starts at Bellevue and goes for about three kilometres to Tiefenbrunnen. In the summertime the boardwalk is full of others enjoying the late sun in the evenings and the scenery.

Clubs: Zurich is synonymous with clubbing. The best way to know what's going on in the club scene is to pick up a free copy of 20 Minuten and check the events listings. Famous DJs are always in town and with the most clubs per capita in Europe, it's highly unlikely you won't find exactly what you're looking for. Paint the town red!

The city hosts a wealth of 4 and 5 star establishments which see the likes of celebrities, diplomats, politicians and business pass through their doors. There are two youth hostels in town, more expensive that in other parts of Europe.
