Tips for travelling to Dublin:
The last thing you want when travelling is a major hiccup, especially if it is unexpected. To have a holiday free some setbacks and delays takes a little bit of preparation and attention to detail.
Passports:
One of the first things to check is your travel documents and if a visa is required or not to travel to Dublin. Is your passport still valid? For most countries passports need to still be valid for 3-6 months after the travel dates, so make sure that your documents are up to date to avoid any discrepancies. Always bring a photocopy of your passport and other important documents (health card, health insurance card, driver’s licence, birth certificate, etc.) just in case. Also make sure you have a copy or proof of your return airline ticket to Dublin. It is also a good idea to pack this copy in a different place than the originals. If you plan on renting a car in Dublin it is a good idea to apply for an international driver’s licence if it is required. This takes 10 business days in the UK.
Visas:
In some cases you might need to apply for a visa to enter the country, depending of your purpose of travel (leisure, tourist, business, etc.) and your length of stay. In most countries a visa is not requires for British nationals if the stay does not exceed 90 days. Check with the nearest embassy or consulate if you are uncertain or have any doubts. It’s also a good idea to take along two or three extra passport-sized photographs.
Vaccinations:
Besides paperwork, sometimes even vaccinations are required to travel, especially if you have travelled through or from yellow fever endemic areas. These regions are mostly in Africa and Latin America, including Bolivia, Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. If you know you are travelling around these regions, its better to do your research in advance and be prepared rather than denied transit.
It’s always good advice to ask if the tap water is potable before drinking. You might be surprised! And there is nothing more unpleasant on a trip than getting stomach flu or other infection in the digestive tract. Wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly and stick to bottled water.
Luggage:
Have you ever winced at the airport when they placed your luggage on the scale? 2 kilos over and you’ve got to rearrange. The excess luggage fees can sometimes cost more than the flight if you are travelling on a low cost airline. Standard check-in luggage weight restrictions are between 18-23 kg so it’s best to bring the necessities and leave room for all of the treasures you will bring home with you too. Make a list before packing and put anything fragile or important into your carry-on bag. Leave your scissors, tweezers, knitting needles and other potentially lethal and point objects in the luggage you will check underneath the airplane.
Liquids? Always check what the restrictions are before leaving for the airport. All containers of crèmes, lotions, water, contact lens solution, cosmetics and others must be in containers of 100 ml or less. Place them all in a re-sealable plastic bag so that they are easy to show when heading through security.
It happens to everyone unfortunately. Suitcases get misplaced or left behind on connecting flights. If this is the case, as it could be, bring an extra set of clothes with you in your cabin luggage so that you are not left stranded with only the clothes on your back.
