Air Asia is Asia's biggest low cost airline based in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. History of Air Asia
Air Asia was founded in 1993 by the government of Malaysia but did not begin operations until 1996. In 2001 the airline was privatised after years of debt and profit poured in almost immediately. The new owner, Time Warner executive Tony Fernandes, added new routes from the airline’s hub in Kuala Lumpur and the airline became a leading competitor to Malaysia Airlines. Air Asia’s second hub opened in 2003 in Senai International Airport that is located near Singapore. Air Asia added destinations to the network like Indonesia, Macau, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Air Asia plans to strengthen and increase traffic in Asia by expanding its network and making connections in Indochina, South China and India. It now has two subsidiary airlines Thai Air Asia and Indonesia Air Asia with which it use s to operate regional and domestic low cost flights.

Onboard Services
- Meals: Passengers wishing to eat during their flight are given the option during booking to purchase a meal or a snack to be served during the flight. As well there are refreshments for purchase.
- Entertainment: Air Asia has an in-flight magazine called Travel 3Sixty. Passengers are always welcome to bring their own reading material and electronics to use during the flight.
Baggage Allowances:
- Cabin: 1 piece of carry-on luggage is permitted per passenger. It must not exceed the dimensions of 56 x 36 x 23 cm or weigh more than 7 kg.
- Checked: Baggage allowance must be purchased at the time of booking. The allowance is 15 kg. Passengers can purchase excess luggage as well on-line or at the airport.
- Excess: There are excess baggage fees on all pieces of baggage exceeds the limit. These fees can be paid on-line before check-in or at the airport. The fees vary depending on destination and departure city. The fees are calculated on a per kilo basis.
