History of Blue 1

The Finnish airline Blue 1 was founded in 1988 under the name Air Botnia. It began this year with domestic routes in Finland. With time Blue 1 has established itself as Finland’s second largest airline by operating domestic routes as well as routes to Scandinavia and Europe. In 1998 the airline became a fully owned subsidiary of SAS. The following year the airline introduced new hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. In the year 2000 Blue 1 completely rejuvenated its fleet and entered the jet era. The name change from Air Botnia to Blue 1 took place in 2004 at which time routes increased and it joined Star Alliance as a regional member. In 2006 the company added more routes targeted at business travelers, opening up travel possibilities for business relations between Helsinki and Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, London, Zurich, and Warsaw. Also thinking about its leisure travelers routes to Nice, Rome, Athens and Barcelona were added as well. Along with many other airlines, in 2007 Blue 1 added the option for its travelers to off-set flight emissions.
