Afriqiyah Airways is a Libyan airline founded in 2001. Afriqiyah operates domestic flights between Tripoli and Benghazi as well as to international destinations in Europe the Middle East and Asia. Afriqiyah Airways aims to be the number one airline carrier for the African continent, its logo paying homage to the date the Sirte Declaration was signed which formed the African Union.

History of Afriqiyah Airways

Afriqiyah Airways was founded in 2001 by the Libyan government. Its inaugural flight took off that same year. The airline began operations using Boeing 737 aircraft but by 2003 the airline had signed deals and agreements to change its fleet wholly over to operating with Airbus aircraft. The first was delivered in 2008.

Afriqiyah Airways has a growing network of destinations that reach from Tripoli to all sides of the African continent as well as into the Middle East and Europe.

  • Onboard Services

    • Meals: There is meal service on all of Afriqiyah’s flights. The airline can accommodate special meal requirements if given at least 24 hours notice.
    • Entertainment: Each passenger has their own on-demand entertainment system which is programmed with films, television shows, and radio stations. There is also an in-flight magazine.
  • Baggage Allowances

    • Cabin: 1 piece per passenger is allowed. It can weigh up to 10 kg and the sum dimensions must not exceed 115 cm.
    • Checked: Each passenger is permitted 2 pieces of luggage; each can weigh up to 24 kg. The sum of the total dimensions of the luggage must not exceed 158 cm.
    • Excess: If the baggage weight allowance is exceeded there is a fee of €12 / kilo. If the baggage exceeds the size limit and not the weight there is a fee of €100. To check an additional piece of luggage there is a charge of €200. It is possible at peak travel times that Afriqiyah Airways does not accept excess luggage.
