History of Air Niugini

Air Niugini was established in 1973 to be the national airline of Papua New Guinea. Operations started with only domestic flights but international routes were added shortly after. By 1975 the airline was operating flights to Manila and Hong Kong and in 1979 to Honolulu and Singapore. Passenger numbers dropped drastically during the 1990s as a result of the unrest in Bougainville and Rabaul's erupting volcano. The airline was able to remain profitable though thanks to the decision to set up offices in Asia and Europe. Today the airline provides much needed services on domestic routes to its local people while continuing to be the main airline to connect Papua New Guinea with the world.
