History of Biman Bangladesh Airlines

Biman Bangladesh was founded in 1972 as the national airline of the country after it gained independence. The airline was originally named Air Bangladesh International but it didn't take long for the name to change to its current one. In the local language, biman means "aeroplane".

Domestic services started in 1972 from Dhaka to Chittagong, Jessore and Sylhet. One month following its inaugural flight, international routes opened to London and Calcutta. As aircraft were added to the fleet, destinations were added to the network. Soon Biman was flying to Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, Singapore and Amsterdam. Biman's most successful year was 2005, carrying 1.5 million passengers.
