Experience Brunei: what to see, what to do
Brunei is small but it packs a big punch and is one of the richest countries in Southeast Asia thanks to its petroleum and natural gas resources. The country has been ruled by the same family for more than 600 years and the royal palace is always the first sight to see for first-time visitors.
Essentials in Brunei
Istana Nurul Iman: Brunei’s royal palace is the largest occupied residential palace. The palace plot is 300 acres and sits on a man-made hill with views of Kampong Ayer. The current Sultan lives there with his family.
Scuba diving: Brunei has some fantastic scuba diving in the Chinese Sea with plenty of shipwrecks in good condition. The Blue Water Wreck is the most popular, an 80m trawler.
Kampong Ayer: This water village is best visited by taxi boat and is really quite a magical sight with hundreds of small houses that seem to float on the water. Catch a water taxi anywhere along the Brunei River in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Accommodation in Brunei
Hotels in Brunei used to be very expensive but with new budget guesthouses opening every year the country has become more affordable for budget travellers. There is only one youth hostel in the country but hopefully this will change in the near future.
