Car hire companies (Europcar, Avis, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise...) are generally located in city centres, or near airports and train stations. You can select your departure city, train station or airport directly in the search bar at the top of this page. 

Car hire also benefits from the low cost trend. Brands such as Budget or Firefly often show very attractive prices. If you make your reservation online and in advance, you will find better prices than if you go directly to a car hire agency. You will get the best rates by focusing on standard models in the ”Mini” and ”Economy” categories.

Some companies allow you to hire a car for several months. Make sure to check the number of miles allowed per day or the total length of your lease. Depending on the company, you could be asked to pay the full amount at once. 

The legal age for hiring a car varies from country to country. Most agencies in the UK and Europe allow rentals from the age of 21. Certain brands such as Sixt or Europcar accept hires from the age of 18, under certain conditions (years of driving experience, vehicle category). Note that agencies almost always apply additional fees if you are a young driver. 

In the US, it depends on the state, New York and Michigan have state laws requiring car rental agencies to rent to drivers age 18 and over, all other states allow companies to set their own age requirement at their discretion. For certain types of vehicles (utility vans and luxury cars) you need to be at least 25 years old. 

To hire a car, you will need to provide :

• Your identity card or passport
• Your driving license
• A credit card in your name
• Proof of address (depending on the company)
• A phone number (depending on the company)

American Express, Visa and Mastercard credit cards are the most commonly accepted by car hire companies. If you have another type of credit card, please check well in advance that this type of card will be accepted by the car hire agency. 

Everywhere in the world, civil liability or ”third party insurance” covering bodily injury and property damage caused to others is covered by the insurance included in the price of your car hire. In many European countries, the ”bodily injury” guarantee covering the driver is included in the basic insurance. In other countries, it is recommended that you take out additional insurance to cover you in case of an accident.

Car hire companies also offer several types of complementary insurance to cover the following cases: vehicle repair costs in case of an accident for which you would be responsible, protection of other passengers in the vehicle, protection against theft and vandalism. While not mandatory, these insurances are highly recommended to avoid exorbitant fees in  the event of a problem. The sign must tell you the deductible amount, which is the maximum amount you would have to pay in the event of a claim.

If you have a Gold Mastercard or Visa Premier credit card, you may have some protection in case of breakdown or theft. Check with your bank for details of the coverage and whether they apply in the country where you are hiring your car. Please note: depending on the country in which you hire a car, some insurances are mandatory and credit card insurance is not sufficient.

Yes, some car hire companies in the UK accept debit cards, under special conditions and requiring additional documents, such as utility bills, proof of resources, proof of insurance and/or extra identification documents. Make sure to contact the agency to be aware of the conditions.
 
In most European countries, it is also possible to pay by debit card, but it is advisable to check on a case-by-case basis by contacting the car hire company. If you wish to pay by debit card, prepaid card, cash, or cheque, you will be asked to make a deposit and/or take out specific insurance.

It is possible to cross borders with a hire car, as long as you inform the car hire company in advance. Also make sure that your insurance coverage applies in the different countries you travel through.

In the majority of cases, the companies will let you cross borders free of charge, but some of them charge for this option.

When you pick up your rental car, make sure to check the following points in the presence of a person from the car hire company and take note of the condition of the car in the car hire agreement :

• The bodywork
• The tyres
• The mirrors
• The state of the seats
• Front and rear lights
• The mileage, which must be identical to the mileage stated on the contract.

Check the fuel policy to avoid extra charges. Most rental companies operate with a full/full policy (collection and return of the vehicle with a full tank). If you follow this policy, you only pay for the fuel you use.

Finally, when returning the vehicle, don't be late to avoid paying extra fees!
