Car hires in Bari: practical information
Where to rent a car in Bari
Bari is the gateway to Italy’s southern region of Apulia and is right on the Adriatic Coast. Why not book a Bari rental car at the same time as you book your cheap flights to Bari Airport? Choose your rent car from Hertz, Europa Sicily, Europcar, Locauto, Sixt, Budget and Avis.
You can also pick up a rental car from Bari’s city centre if you don’t manage to get one at the airport. Most agencies will also drop you off at the airport for free if you hire a car from their city office.
Driving in Bari: parking and other tips
Central Bari is very compact so you won’t have much use for your car hire if you’re staying put in Bari for the day. Parking could be an issue in Bari if your hotel doesn’t provide parking facilities, either on-site or in a nearby lot.
If you’re stuck for a place to park, head to the free parking area south of the main port entrance. There’s also a large car park near the train station as well as one on Via Zuppetta, across from Hotel Adria.
Road trips from Bari: what to do, what to see
This really is one of Italy’s most peculiar towns. UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll find yourself among 1,500 beehive-shaped houses in the Zone die Trulli. These small houses are made of local limestone and some are a hundred or so years old. Unfortunately in the summer months this town is overrun with tourist buses.
Polignano a Mare
If you’re travelling 34km south of Bari, make sure you stop in Polignano a Mare, a small seaside town built on the edge of a craggy ravine and dotted with caves along the beaches. It was a strategic point in Puglia and was inhabited by just about everyone from the Huns to the Normans.
The “Forest of Shadows” is a fab spot if you’re looking for an easy day trip from Bari. It’s the last remaining thicket of Puglia’s ancient forests and is made up of epically tall Aleppo pines, oaks, yews and beech trees. More than 65 types of orchids have been found here!
