Frequently asked questions about Black Friday

What is Black Friday?

The first time you read or listened to the term “Black Friday”, you probably wondered what it was and when it was held..

Black Friday is a commercial operation that marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in most physical and online companies. Black Friday has its origins in the United States and is celebrated on the last Friday of November, the day after Thanksgiving. In 2024, Black Friday will be Friday, 29 November.

When did we start celebrating Black Friday?

There are several theories about the origin of the name in the United States. One of them mentions the fact that it is on this day that the accounts of the companies go from red (negative result compared to the previous year) to black (positive result). Another theory refers to the city of Philadelphia where the police teams in charge of traffic regulation started to use this term because of the many traffic jams after Thanksgiving caused by the many citizens returning home.

It is said that the rest of the United States really became aware of the phenomenon on 19 November 1975, when the New York Times mentioned the concept of “black” in reference to the traffic and madness that occurred in New York that day, due to the discounts the day after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday in the UK

In recent years, this phenomenon has become increasingly popular in the UK, particularly in the fields of electronics and fashion. Since 2005, due to the explosive growth of the Internet, Black Friday has a brother: Cyber Monday, created specifically for online stores.

When is Black Friday?

In 2024, Black Friday will be celebrated on Friday, 29 November. It is not uncommon to see some discounts start from the beginning of the fourth week of November and we often see offers extend to the Monday, Cyber Monday. We then talk about “Black week” or “Cyber week”.

If you do not make it on time, you can also note the date of the next Black Friday:

  • Black Friday 2024 – 29 november
  • Black Friday 2025 – 28 november
