What you should know before hiring a car in Houston
Car hires in Houston: practical information
Where to rent a car in Houston
Houston is the premiere destination in Texas! Touch down at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) on your flights to Houston and pick up a Houston rent car in the arrivals lounge. Every major national car hire agency is located at the airport, so you won’t be short of choice.
E-Z Rent-A-Car is a local agency, located just outside the airport but a shuttle van will pick you up from the airport and takes you to the car hire pick-up counter. Compare the prices; it may be more worthwhile to go with a local company rather than an international one.
Driving in Houston: parking and other tips
Houston has a vast network of superhighways and traffic moves fast. Generally it’s easy to get in and around Houston by car but many of the sights are within walking distance of each other. To visit places outside of the city centre, a car hire is absolutely necessary.
Parking is easy enough to come by. Most major hotels will offer guests complimentary parking but best to double check before you book your hotel in Houston.
Road trips from Houston: what to do, what to see
This city on Galveston Island off the Texas Gulf Coast is a popular day trip from Houston and many of the locals in Houston will also have beach houses here. When you’re not lazing on the sand, don’t forget to check out the Moody Gardens, Haak Vineyards and Winery and Ashton Villa.
Surfside Beach tends to be less crowded than Galveston and is halfway between the Gulf of Mexico and the Intercoastal Waterway. There is free parking along the beach. Bring a picnic and enjoy a BBQ using one of the public beach grills! The surfing is great here.
While many visit this small city outside of Houston for the boardwalks and beaches, many others visit for the Johnston Space Center and the Space Center Houston. Both sites have tours, exhibitions and simulators to try out.
