Road trips from Nimes: what to do, what to see
Le Pont du Gard
If you still want to see more Roman ruins after visiting Nimes’ city centre, head out to the A9 with your Nimes car hire and visit this impressive aqueduct. It is clearly signposted from the motorway and in Roman times, this aqueduct used to carry water to Nimes.
Arles
This Roman town is a treat to visit during the summer when it’s bullfighting season. It’s a great spot to stop if you’re en route to Camargue. Do the pastel and sun-baked houses here remind you of something? If you’re a fan of Van Gogh, you’ll no doubt recognise this place.
La Camargue
This national wildlife reserve is one of the best places for birdwatching in all of Europe. It’s a giant river delta and is home to France’s wild white horses. The nearby salt flats also produce a lot of salt, a product the locals swear by and a must-buy souvenir.
