Car hires in Zagreb: practical information
Where to rent a car in Zagreb
Zagreb is too often overlooked for the coast! Don’t make that mistake and search for your flights to Zagreb and if you still want to visit the coast, make sure you get yourself a Zagreb car hire. Pick up your Zagreb rent car from the airport, choosing from Sixt, An Nova, Hertz, Active Rent A Car, Fleet Rent A Car, Autorent, Filipovic, Oryx Rent-a-Car, M.A.C.K., Dollar/Thrifty, Uni Rent, among others.
When choosing a rental agency, remember that local companies will almost always offer a lower price. If you’re looking for a car hire from the city centre, try Avis or Budget, both located at the Hotel Sharaton on Kneza Borne. Hertz also has a city central location.
Driving in Zagreb: parking and other tips
Zagreb is fairly easy to navigate by car with its wide boulevards. Parking garages have plenty of space and cost 5KN an hour. Zagreb is a tram city, so just beware of them as they buzz around traffic.
It’s a good idea to book a hotel in Zagreb with a car park if you plan to rent a car for the entirety of your trip.
Road trips from Zagreb: what to do, what to see
Samobor
Samobor is a pretty medieval town that is just 25 kilometre to the west of Zagreb. It makes a perfect day trip. The town architecture is mostly from the Baroque period. It’s also rumoured that you can find the best Croatian cakes here, keep your eyes open for “kremšnite” in bakeries.
Karlovac
Just 45 kilometres from Zagreb is this gorgeous city that sits at the confluence of four rivers. Croatians call it the “city of four rivers” but in fact only three flow through it and the fourth is a bit on the outskirts. And then there’s the fifth river… the one made of beer!
Ljubljana
A road trip to the Slovenian capital is the perfect addition to your trip to Zagreb. The car-free city centre is a lively place in summer when cafes spill out onto the pavement and you can find live music in just about every city square. It’s a youthful and artistic city with so much on offer.
