Planning a trip to Sardinia? Start with cheap flights to Alghero's main airport, Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO) just outside the city centre. Alitalia flies from London Heathrow to Alghero but if you're after the cheapest flights to Alghero, stick to low cost airlines like Ryanair. Thomson Airways also flies to Alghero.
Alghero, and Sardinia in general, is a summer destination so you should book your flights at least 3 months in advance if you plan to visit from June to late August. Winters are generally quiet and some airlines only offer flights to Alghero on a seasonal basis.
Direct flights to Alghero take 2 hours 25 minutes from London.
Alghero is one of Sardinia's most popular destinations with plenty of beautiful beaches, great food at reasonable prices and its Catalan origins. No wonder it's often referred to as Little Barcelona. From historic sites to beach side cocktails, let's go!
Neptune's Grotto: If you have a car hire from Alghero, take advantage of it and discover Neptune's Grotto in Cappo Caccia. It's a 45 minute trip there and from Cappo Caccia it's another 10 minute walk down to the grotto. The view is worth the €10 entry fee!
Historic town: Alghero isn't just popular for its beaches. Many visitors come here to explore the city's historic quarter as well. The narrow streets are completely car-free and are lined with cafes, restaurants with plenty of seafood on the menu.
Bosa: The coastal route outside of Alghero is really lovely with lush vegetation, rocky mountains and unspoilt beaches. Take the road towards Bosa, a small medieval village with has a number of important historic buildings and hasn't been overrun with tourists… yet.
