Planning a holiday in Eritrea? This East African country fronts the Red Sea with a beautiful coast. Start with cheap flights to Eritrea’s main airport, Asmara International Airport (ASM). From London, catch flights onboard British Airways and Egyptair.
Eritrea is a long coastline along the Red Sea, which is usually hot and dry year-round. The central highlands are significantly cooler and have a rainy season from June to September, so plan your trip around that. Book your flights to Eritrea at least 4-5 months in advance for the cheapest fares.
Flights to Eritrea take around 11 hours with stopovers from London.
Eritrea is at odds with Ethiopia so tourism isn’t exactly a national priority but there is so much this country has to offer! The capital’s colonial architecture is something to be seen, the coast is amazing and inland, unspoilt landscapes wait.
Asmara: Colonial Italian architecture is really the main draw here. The palm-lined Independence Avenue is full of coffee shops, bars and old cinemas and it’s the heart of the city. Don’t miss the National Museum while you’re here.
Red Sea Coast: Eritrea’s coast is home to some of the Red Sea’s most pristine coral reefs and marine wildlife like dolphins, tigerfish, sharks and more. For great beaches, head to the Dahlak Islands near Massawa.
Massawa: Located on the coast but its old town is on Batsi Island with a charming Ottoman feel to it. Nearby Dahlak and Green Island have some really amazing snorkelling and diving along pristine beaches and in turquoise and clear waters.

Asmara, the capital city, has plenty to offer visitors in terms of hotels. The only international hotel chain present is the Intercontinental. Outside the capital, hotels in Eritrea are modest and quite cheap. Massawa has two beach resorts with air-conditioned rooms, a must during the hot months.
