Taipei: Chinese pop-culture lives here, as do Taiwan's government and commerce sectors. The world's fourth tallest skyscraper is located here, Taipei 101.
Sun Moon Lake: Located at 762m in Nantou County, this is probably one of the most famous sights in Taiwan. The lake's clear sparkling blue waters with mountains in the background are as romantic a landscape can get.
Tainan: Once upon a time, during the island's imperial days, Tainan was the capital. As the island's oldest city, Tainan is popular for its historic buildings and heritage sights.

Taipei is the best option for visitors looking for cheap hotels in Taiwan. The most hostels are located there but it's pretty easy to find mid-range hotels in most all other cities. Be wary of "motels," as these are mostly only used for romantic escapades and not cheap hotels like the name suggests in other countries.
