Is Albania calling your name? Plan a trip to the capital, Tirana, with cheap flights to Tirana International Airport (TIA), just a short jump out of town. British Airways is the only airline offering direct flights to Tirana, from London Gatwick. Most all other major European carriers offer the route with 1 or 2 connections.
Tirana is hot, hot, hot when summer arrives with average temperatures well over 30°C during the day. If it's a city break you're after, better to visit during spring or fall. Book your holiday in Tirana at least three-four months before your preferred travel dates.
Direct flights to Tirana take just less than 3 hours from London.
Tirana has an interesting city with an even more interesting nightlife. Do Albanians know how to throw a party! Tirana is certainly undergoing a major rejuvenation period following 60 years of dictatorship and communism. Today it's a buzzing city with plenty to be discovered.
National Historic Museum: Start your trip off with a history lesson and drop by this museum which takes visitors from ancient times right to Hoxha's regime. Entry is 200 lek.
Piramida: You can't miss this place when you're wandering around Tirana. The International Centre of Culture was originally built according to the designs of Hoxha's daughter in the 1980s. It was first a museum of her father and George W Bush even delivered a speech in front of it.
Mount Dajti: Tirana can seem a sprawling urban city at first glance but it has some pretty splendid parks too. Take the cable car up the hill to Mount Dajti for great views of the whole city. The area is great for cycling (bikes are allowed on the cable car) and trekking. Don't miss Pellumba Cave!

Looking for a cheap hotel in Tirana? There are a number of hostels in the city centre as well as mid-range hotels. Budget options aren't as cheap as you'd think as there is a mandatory government tax on all hotel rooms of 1000 lek per person. Booking in advance is always good travel advice.
