Colonia: Declared an UNESCO WHS, Colonia’s old cobble-stone streets and colonial architecture make it a mainstay on the country’s tourist trail. The town is gorgeous and the eight museums cost only a few pennies to get in.
Tacuarembo: Located in the north, this town is the centre for Gaucho culture and is also the birthplace of Carlos Gardel, the most important figure in the history of tango. Don’t miss his namesake museum while you’re here!

If you’re all about the beach while you’re in Uruguay then a beach-front hotel or beach house is the best option. Prices tend to spike up during high season, especially in the first two weeks of January. Hotels need to be booked at least a couple months in advance.
