Experience Vilnius: what to see, what to do

Vilnius has always been an international city with Slavs, Lithuanians, Germans and Jews living here for centuries. The city is small enough that most of it can be walked so get ready to explore the old town, discover castles and stand in awe of cathedrals.

Essentials in Vilnius

Uzupis District: Part of Vilnius' old town, the Uzupic District is where you'll find a more local Vilnius. Many artists live in this unrestored quarter. It is often compared to Copenhagen's Christiania because the neighbourhood declared itself unofficially independent.

St. Anne's Church: This is by far one of the most beautiful churches in Vilnius and in all of Lithuania. It's small but a very fine example of Gothic architecture.

Gediminas Castle: From the cathedral, take the funicular up the hill to the castle. It was constructed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries by the Dukes of Lithuania. The main tower, in red brick, has been restored and you can enjoy the best views of the city from it.
