Second day of summer, here we come! We’re starting the weekend early because hey, it’s officially summer and there are a ton of lakes to be discovered. Stir things up a little and go lake-side rather than sea-side this summer.

The Great Lakes

Huron, Ontario, Superior, Erie and Michigan… these great bodies of water are definitely something to see! You know they’re great but do you know how great? Combined they cover 244,100 km², that’s almost as big as the entire United Kingdom! There are some pretty fantastic cities on the lakes, Toronto, Chicago, Montreal to name a few and the beaches are totally underrated.

Lake Como

 

Lombardy is your ticket to fresh air, charming lake-side villas, mountains and great weather. Lake Como is has been a popular holiday spot for centuries. If you station yourself in Como, the main resort town on the lake, don’t miss the other towns dotting the lake like Tremezzo, Bellagio and Varenna. To do? Boat tours are the most popular, following by hiking in the surrounding mountains.

Lake Baikal

 

The world’s oldest and the world’s deepest (1637m!), Lake Baikal is one lake everyone should on holidays in Russia. You’ll get your first glimpse of it on the Trans-Siberian approaching Irkutsk. There are nature reserves surrounding the lake, perfect spots to go camping, hiking and enjoy swimming in the lake. Don’t miss a visit to Olkhon, the largest island in the lake.

Caspian Sea

Sea or lake? It really depends on how you look at it. Fully-enclosed, the Caspian Sea is surrounded by Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. As the largest body of water in the world, you can bet that each country’s coast offers something a little bit different. For something a little different, try a trip to the Iranian Riviera, just a 4 hour drive from Tehran.
