The A to Z of car hires
Legal ageThe legal age for renting a car varies from country to country. In the UK, and generally around the world, you need to be at least 21 years old to hire a car. There are a few exceptions to this rule however: USA (18 years old), Italy (19 years old), Austria (19 years old), Israel (24 years old) and Ireland (25 years old). For certain types of vehicles (utility vans, luxury cars), you need at be at least 25 years old.
Documents to bringIn order to hire a car, you will need to bring the following documents with you:
• Identity card or passport
• Driver's license
• Credit card or bank card
Certain rental companies also require:
• Proof of address
• Telephone number
InsuranceCollision Damage Waiver insurance (this covers the cost of repairing any damage to the car) is normally included in the rental price. When a car hire company says the rental is “all inclusive,” they mean that CDW is included in the rental price. Additional insurance can also be purchased, like Windscreen & Tyre protection. You do not have to purchase these additional insurance packages.
Car hire conditionsPicking up and dropping off the vehicle
Always check the state of the car with the rental agent present. Make note of any and all abnormalities in the hire agreement. Here are the things to check:
• Front and rear lights
• Mileage (must be identical to the one written on the contract)
Don’t forget to fill up the car with the same amount of petrol, as when you picked up the car, otherwise you will see an additional fill up fee on your final bill. Agencies will charge you for the missing litres at a fixed price, a lot higher than what you would pay at a petrol station. And remember don’t be late!
