Car hires in Basel: practical information
Where to rent a car in Basel
Planning a trip to beautiful Basel in Switzerland? A rent car will certainly make getting around town and exploring the countryside a lot easier. Pick up your car hire at Basel Airport when you disembark from your flights to Basel. You’ll find Hertz and Avis, among others in the arrival’s terminal.
There are a number of car hire agencies in Basel’s city centre. Avis and Hertz are in Hilton Hotels but they also have branches at the SBB station. CityRent is located at Hotel Alexander and hires cars by the hour or day and is a great alternative if you just need to zip around town.
Driving in Basel: parking and other tips
Driving in Basel isn’t anything to stress about. It’s a good idea to avoid the city centre during rush hour but otherwise, it’s a breeze. There is parking available at the SBB station which costs around Sfr1.50 per hour. For long-term parking, it’s a good idea to book a Basel hotel that offers complimentary parking on-site.
Road trips from Basel: what to do, what to see
Nothings too far away when you’re travelling in Switzerland. Lucerne is arguably one of the most beautiful towns in the country and a must if you have a rental car from Basel. Lake Lucerne offers spectacular views of the Alps just behind. Watch out though, in summer this is a popular spot for tourists and parking and driving in the city can be a headache.
There are few places where you can see palm trees in Switzerland but this is one of them, at the southern end of Switzerland where the country meets Italy. Head to Ticino, where Italia and Swiss culture blend. From here it’s easy to visit Como in Italy and other charming towns like Morcote and Melide.
Laufenburg isn’t typically on the list of “must-sees” in Switzerland but it’s a pretty place that’s not flooded with tourists (yet). This medieval town is half Swiss and half German with the Rhine dividing it into two. If you have more time ,continue driving north for two hours to Schaffhausen to visit the Rhine Falls.
