Car hires in Gibraltar: practical information
Where to rent a car in Gibraltar
It's no wonder the British wanted claim to The Rock! Located on the southern tip of Spain, just at the mouth of the Mediterranean, it's the perfect place for not only curious travellers but those looking for sun… in England! Are you heading south for a trip? Don't limit yourself to only Gibraltar when Spain is so closely. Grab a car for hire in Gibraltar and you're on your way to having a perfect holiday in Gibraltar.
Gibraltar is tiny, a mere 2.7 square miles. There are only two car hire companies in Gibraltar, Avis and Budget. Avis is located very close to the Gibraltar Airport, at the Victoria Stadium while Budget is further into town along the Queensway, near Europort Avenue.
Driving in Gibraltar: parking and other tips
It can be tricky at times to park in Gibraltar. There are a number of municipal car parks on the lower part, in the main town centre but you can also park on side streets up the hill. Beware though, these hills are steep and you're really putting your parking brake to the test if you park on a hill. Instead, try to find a plateau. Streets are very narrow and the locals are creative when it comes to parallel parking. Use your mirrors and don't be afraid to squeeze. The locals are used to bumper bumping in order to fit in.
Hotels located in Gibraltar will rarely have parking available due to the lack of space and small streets. Instead it's better to use an underground car park or if you're lucky, to find a non-residential spot that permits you to park for free overnight.
Road trips from Gibraltar: what to do, what to see
Cross the border and you enter a whole other world! Many Gibraltar locals cross the border for parties, since alcohol and drinking is cheaper in Spain than on The Rock. It would be a shame to come all this way and not enjoy the Andalusian flavour! For a Spanish night out, try San Roque, a small city that is less than 15 minutes drive from the border of Gibraltar.
Estepona takes less than an hour to reach from Gibraltar, it is a popular resort town along the southern coast of Spain. Along the way are a number of excellent stops for beaches including Bahia Dorada, La Duquesa and San Luis de Sabinillas. If you want to trek further, Marbella is a good (and sometimes star-studded) choice! Bring your own beach towel because the chairs on the beach are often reserved.
Tarifa, the southernmost point of Spain is just 30 miles drive away. From here you can get an even clearer view of Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. Tarifa itself isn't very interesting but in less than an hour you can be on another continent entirely! Bring your passports if you plan to cross, it certainly makes an exciting addition to any trip to Gibraltar. Some ferries even allow you to bring your cheap rent car from Gibraltar onboard.
