Leicester is the hub of the East Midlands region of the UK and is also one of the oldest cities in England, having been founded by the Romans. You won't have much trouble finding a place to park your rent car in Leicester. There are 7000+ off-street parking spots around the city plus another 1300 on-street ones. There are four main car parks located in each part of the city: north, east, south, west. Street parking costs £1/30 minutes, £1.60/1 hour and £2.90/2 hours (max stay). Street parking is free after 6:00pm until 7:30am.
Alternatively you can book yourself hotels in Leicester that have parking available. It's best to call in advance to make sure they reserve a spot for you, especially if they have a small lot. This will definitely help you save a bit of money while on holidays in Leicester.
Road trips from Leicester: what to do, what to see
- A stone's throw away: In the summer everyone heads to Rutland Water, located just 20 miles to the east of Leicester. It's a popular spot for picnics, fishing and swimming. Pack some food and head out there on a sunny afternoon.
- A little further: Nottingham is just 30 miles to the north of Leicester and is a great city to visit if you're already in the Midlands. Of course if you're going to Nottingham get ready to get your fix of the Robin Hood legend.
- A proper day-trip: Coventry is the jewel of the West Midlands, also 30 miles from Leicester but to the south-west. It is known for its cathedrals although much of the city was destroyed by German bombs during WWII.
