Leo Tolstoy’s country house near Tula is a popular day trip from Moscow for fans of the author’s work. The house is where Tolstoy was born and where he wrote two of his greatest works, War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Today the house is a museum which includes his personal effects and his library of 22,000 volumes.
A road trip to one of Russia’s oldest cities is definitely in order if you book a Moscow rental car. The ancient fortress is a must see, built in the 1500s and withstood several wars. Nearby is also Katyn, the site where the Katyn massacre took place, which resulted in thousands of Polish dead.
