Car hires in Fuerteventura: practical information

Where to rent a car in Fuerteventura

There’s certainly no shortage of places to hire a car in Fuerteventura. There are so many places, some of them double as bars! You don’t usually need to book a rental in advance unless you’re travelling at Christmas or Easter.

Hertz and Avis have several branches but local agency Cicar usually has better rates, particularly from Fuerteventura Airport (FUE).

Driving in Fuerteventura: parking and other tips

Most all visitors hire a car for their holiday in Fuerteventura, it’s simply the easiest way to get around. Keep in mind however that not all roads are in great condition and if you suffer from vertigo, be careful when driving along the coast as the roads tend to bend and wrap themselves around high mountain cliffs.

Road trips from Fuerteventura: what to do, what to see

Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario

This is the island’s main city which used to be called “Puerto de Cabra” (Goat Port) which, as you can imagine, didn’t attract the tourists in droves. The city has a new name and is well on its way to becoming the next big thing in the Canary Islands.

Corralejo

Corralejo

Heading north, this is really a unique part of the island. It’s famous for its sand dunes which blew over across the sea from the Sahara Desert, 60 miles away. It looks like a little piece of Africa! In Corralejo you can see sand dunes for miles upon miles.

Jandia

Jandia Peninsula

Fuerteventura’s second main resort area, after Corralejo, is the Jandia Peninsula in the south. There are dozens of beaches here, including one that is a whopping 16 miles long. In recent years there has been a lot of development with a lot of new hotels being built so beaches tend to be more crowded than on other parts of the island.
