Car hires in Reykjavik: practical information
Where to rent a car in Reykjavik
Looking forward to a trip to Iceland? There is so much to discover outside of Reykjavik that it’s a good idea to book a Reykjavik car hire before you go. There are many car rental agencies in the capital, particularly at Reykjavik Airport (RKV). You'll find them located in the arrivals lounge, when you disembark from your flights to Reykjavik.
Driving in Reykjavik: parking and other tips
Driving in Reykjavik is easy but like any capital city, the local drivers can be a bit inconsiderate. While it’s illegal to drive and talk on your mobile phone, many do it. They are also known to drift across lanes and cut corners at junctions.
Reykjavik may have the most cars per capita in the world but it still manages to have a reasonable amount of parking spaces available. There is street parking in the city centre as well a big parking lot by the harbour and in front of the main marketplace, Kolaportið.
Road trips from Reykjavik: what to do, what to see
Viðey
This large island in Kollafjörður is the perfect place to escape the city without actually leaving it. The island used to be inhabited in the early 20th century but today it’s only residents are the birds. In the summer, a cafe is open in a house that was designed by the same man who designed the royal palace in Copenhagen. It’s a must!
Þingvellir National Park
This national park in South Iceland is a must and is an easy trip with a rental car from Reykjavik. The park is home to the world’s longest running Parliament, established in 930 AD and is also the place where the North America and European tectonic plates meet, creating the most dramatic landscapes!
Blue Lagoon
Just south-west from Reykjavik is the famous Blue Lagoon which is just a short distance away from Keflavik Airport. The lagoon’s mineral waters are enjoyable year-round thanks to their constant temperature of around 40°C. Take a swim in the lagoon and get a silica mud treatment all over your body!
