Commuters around the world are ditching their trousers as they ride the metro, tube, subway, undergrounds in 60 cities across 25 countries. London was no exception this year as travellers ditched their trousers to ride the tube in their pants. What fun!
It all started in New York City in 2002 and has gained popularity in cities around the world ever since. The event takes place in January… when people brave the breezes and ride the tube bare-legged. Those brave souls. Around the world it’s known as “No Pants Subway Ride” but of course in the UK the name needed to be changed (keep your pants on, but take your trousers off!).
The concept?
You could call it pure silliness. You could also call it performance art. Improv Everywhere is behind it and the concept is like this,
The idea behind No Pants is simple: Random passengers board a subway car at separate stops in the middle of winter without pants. The participants do not behave as if they know each other, and they all wear winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. The only unusual thing is their lack of pants.
If asked, participants are encouraged to act nonchalant and explain they simply forgot their trousers. New York sees the most participants, and what a thing to write home about if you’re planning a trip to New York next year!
