Coffee lovers, listen up. Berlin is not only among the cheapest of Europe’s capitals, but it’s far from being over-run by tourists, even in summer. If you live for finding the best flat white in town, Berlin is a city with plenty of great contenders. Here are our top coffee picks in Berlin.

Bonanza Coffee Heroes – Oderberger Strasse 35

This is a tiny cafe with only a handful of stools to sit on but if you arrive and it’s crowded, the staff will find you a milk crate or two to sit on around the coffee tasting table if you like. Bonanza Coffee Heroes roasts their own beans and if you plan to bring a bag home with you as a souvenir, remember not to grind it till you get home. The barista here explained, in rather a lot of detail, how ground coffee loses a lot of its flavour in a pressurised aircraft cabin.

Luzia – Oranienstrasse 34

This place near Oranien Platz doesn’t offer anything “special” or peculiar in terms of their coffee menu but the place is very cool. Luzia opens at noon so it’s a great place to stop by in the late afternoon, when you’re just about ready to switch from coffee to something a bit stronger. Vintage tables, chairs and dark golden walls create a warm and inviting atmosphere from the cold streets of the city.

The Barn – Auguststrasse 58

If you’re serious about your caffeine fix, this is the place to go. The Barn has two locations, a cafe on Augustrasse and The Barn Roastery, where all their beans are roasted at Schönhauser Allee, 8. The Roastery is committed to creating a distraction-free environment so visitors can enjoy their cup of coffee to the max. No music is played, laptops are a total no-no and even young children are discouraged as they could distract others from their coffee experience.

Godshot – Immanuelkirchstrasse 32

Godshot is another serious player in the Berlin coffee scene. The cafe also hosts barista seminars and latte art classes if you’d like to learn a thing or two while you’re on holidays in Berlin. They’re members of the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe and one of the founders of the Berlin Coffee Society. They definitely know what they’re doing and their flat white is something very special.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to get a free coffee after every flight? Only in Johannesburg…
