As a city of hills, make sure you pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes for your trip to Lisbon. Up and down, around, by tram and along the Tagus River, over to the São Jorge Castle and finally to one of the city’s many stunning “miradouros” where the views are worth all the walking and climbing.
If you only have a weekend to explore this city, don’t miss the famous Belém Tower on the edge of the Tagus River, the Hieronymites Monastery, a taste of the famous Pastel de Nata (a sweet dessert pastry), the Basilica da Estrela (easily recognised for its white domes) and the Museum of Fashion and Design.
In the bohemian neighbourhood the chance to see a Fado show is not to be missed. It will no doubt be the highlight of your weekend in Lisbon. While melancholic to the ear, these songs are the heart of the Portuguese soul.
