As the warmer weather slowly starts to approach it is safe to say we’d all like to be on a Greek island right about now, soaking in the sun and dipping our feet into the Mediterranean Sea. Would be nice, wouldn’t it? You can! Fly to Heraklion (Iraklio) from London for only £74!
Now you can grab this hot deal (for travel from April 16th to 24th) to Crete’s capital city and spend a week in Greece this month doing just that. Although not warm enough for swimming, April guarantees temperatures in the 20s which are perfect for sightseeing, strolling along the waterfront, sipping an espresso at one of the many buzzing cafés or exploring the city’s collection of chic boutiques. Get out of the city and explore the rest of the island too!
Crete has been crowned one of Greece’s most beautiful islands. It is the largest and most diverse when it comes to landscape. Mountains, soft sandy beaches, secluded coves, caves, olive groves and vineyards, not forgetting the many ancient ruins left behind. Visit the cave where Zeus was born, explore the Venetian fortresses in Rethymo and lose yourself in the labyrinth of the Minoan ruins of Knossos. It is the biggest Bronze Age archeological site on the island and should not be missed.
Grab your leather strapped sandals and a guidebook and start packing your bags for Heraklion, what are you waiting for? Brush up on your ancient history by spending an afternoon at the Archeological Museum of Iraklio, the second most important museum in Greece due to it’s extensive collection of Minoan artifacts. Head to a taverna in the city centre or along the harbour and try a glass of local Cretan wine. Search out the Bembo Fountain, a Venetian addition to the city in the 1860s, and enjoy a coffee at the kafeneio in the Turkish-built pump house located next to it. Hit the beach at Ammoudara, the closest beach to Heraklion. If you want something a little different, try Agia Pelagia or Koundoura, located West and East respectively from the city.
