Finnair is getting its groove on! Its stewardesses broke out in dance on a flight heading to Delhi recently. It wasn’t just any kind of dance, but the coolest, hippest moves from the best of Bollywood. A little went a long way on a January flight to mark India’s Republic Day.

It was one of the air hostesses that came up with the idea, Helena Kaartinen. On her blog she talks about how it all started with a casual conversation with a flight attendant friend from Mumbai.

I listened to my friend talk about the unifying impact of Bollywood on the Indian nation. We also discussed the role of dance as a shared global language. […] His reply made me smile and reminded me of something an Indian acquaintance once said about his home country; Indians might be separated by a multitude of languages and culinary traditions, but one thing they all have in common is the warmth of their hospitality.

Today, the 26th of January, is the Republic Day of India and we were extremely happy to Bolly through the woods to send you our greeting with respect and joy to spend this special day with you all over India!

You could say that passengers on flight AY021 Helsinki – Delhi on January 17th, 2012 got their money’s worth!

With 4.2 million views on YouTube, we can say with confidence that these kinds of videos really show the personality of an airline and travellers love to see them. These days though, it’s hardly enough to create a real buzz.

Remember when Philippine low cost airline Cebu Pacific Airlines did their usual aircraft safety instruction display while dancing to Lady Gaga’s Just Dance and Katy Perry’s California Girls? Immediate buzz.

Have you ever been on a flight when cabin crew have done something really out of the ordinary?
