It can be so, so easy to fall into the tourist trap of just seeing the main sights while on holiday – but anyone worth their travelling salt will no doubt want to head off the beaten track as soon as the plane touches down.

So, for those about to disembark from the cheapest flights to Beijing, the Daily Mirror’s Gill Williams has come up with a few suggestions of where to head first.

These include Beihai park, north-west of the Forbidden City, where some of the traditional neighbourhoods can be found and people who have reserved cheap hotels in Beijing can practice tai chi or take a bike out for a ride.

However, Ms Williams noted that the lakes are “the main attraction” and jet-setters may like to amble down the waterside path that winds round botanical gardens and museums.

Furthermore, AbsoluteChinaTours recently advised travellers that there are holy temples, palaces, historical buildings and Silk Road to check out while on a China trip, all of which may help eager globetrotters on their holidays.
